In Japan, the phrase “letters that crawl like an earthworm” is often used to describe messy or clumsy handwriting. The word “earthworm” in Japanese is “mimizu みみず.”
However, Taisan Tanaka found beauty in this phrase—the beauty of living lines.
Earthworms quietly move beneath the surface, enriching the soil, creating air channels,and producing “black gold” that nourishes all life. Though unseen, they sustain the foundation of the earth.
Likewise, Taisan’s brushstrokes are humble yet alive. Soft, organic, and free, his lines gently crawl across the paper with warmth, kindness, and life. They relax the viewer’s heart, brighten the spirit, and naturally bring a smile. From this philosophy, Taisan created a new style of Japanese calligraphy in New York—“mimizu みみず.”
“mimizu” fuses Japanese tradition with a sense of cuteness and ease,
offering light, joy, and healing through simplicity. Just as the earthworm enriches the soil, Taisan’s “mimizu” calligraphy quietly cultivates the human heart.
日本で「みみずのはいつくばったような字」とは、一般的に“下手な字”や“乱れた字”を意味する表現として
知られています。しかし、田中太山はその言葉の中に、むしろ“生きる線”の美しさを見出しました。
みみずは土の中で静かに動き、世界を豊かにする存在です。その通り道は土を耕し、空気を通し、植物の
根を支えます。みみずの糞は「ブラックゴールド（黒い金）」と呼ばれ、大地に栄養を与え、生命の循環を
支えています。見えないところで、確かに世界を耕し支えている、それがみみずです。
田中太山の書もまた、力強さより“いのちの温もり”を重んじます。地を這うような柔らかな線の中に、
優しさと生命の鼓動が宿ります。整っていないようでいて、自然で、自由で、どこか愛らしい。
見る人の心をほぐし、明るく照らし、思わず笑顔を誘う書です。
そして、この思想から生まれたのが、田中太山がニューヨークに移住してから考案した新しい書道スタイル「mimizu」 です。
「mimizu」は、日本の伝統書道に“ゆるさ”と“かわいさ”を融合させ、見る人の心にやわらかな栄養を与える、まったく新しい表現。それは、土を豊かにするみみずのように、人の心を静かに耕し、笑顔を芽吹かせる
“心の書道”です。
