About “mojiface” by TAISAN
“mojiface” is a unique art form created by TAISAN, blending Japanese characters with imagery using traditional sumi ink and brush techniques. In Japan, this playful and expressive style is sometimes affectionately referred to as “Emoji,” reflecting the way characters can convey both meaning and emotion.
The idea behind mojiface was born from TAISAN’s belief that learning Japanese doesn't have to be difficult — it can be simple, fun, and memorable. By transforming language into art, he hopes to make Japanese more accessible and enjoyable for people around the world.
The Japanese writing system is made up of three scripts: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Hiragana and katakana evolved uniquely within Japan, while kanji originally came from China. Some kanji remain the same as in Chinese, while others have changed over time. Many kanji were originally pictographs, with visual forms that reflect their meanings — a concept that mojiface brings vividly to life.
TAISAN’s mojiface artworks often incorporate not only kanji but also elements of global languages and cultures, merging visual storytelling with linguistic beauty. Each piece becomes a bridge between language, art, and the joy of learning.
